ODL’s third release (Lithium) appears to close the gaps from earlier versions, such as testing, performance, native support of OpenStack Neutron and broader community participation.
ONOS logs its first commercial/production deployment since its release in December 2014. It should mark the beginning of many more, as it touts the carrier-grade characteristics needed to run live traffic.
Why is the OpenDaylight (ODL) Lithium release (its third) an important step in the evolution of the controller? Although the details are many, several features stand out as being important for adoption in a service provider environment. These features include support for: quality of service data, because RestAPIs are more robust in the data identification process; service chaining, to provide the infrastructure needed to provision a service chain and provide the end-user application for defining it; rigorous testing, to characterize multiple use cases to help boost scalability and performance; and better support of security and automation, because with most network functions going virtual, the need for a security architecture becomes more critical, and the ability to automate functions to minimize human errors and improve productivity helps operators reduce the risk of security breaches while reducing overall operational expenses. Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP) solutions, which consolidate formerly discrete CMTS (data) and EdgeQAM (video) cable headend hardware, will pave the way for cable operators to deliver mass-market Gigabit broadband and IP video services.
Current Analysis will provide in-depth, qualitative analysis of CCAP solutions from five different vendors in the coming months, specifically, Cisco, ARRIS, Casa Systems, Harmonic and Huawei.
As video services become more sophisticated and bandwidth-hungry, Gigabit connectivity to every home is getting a lot of hype these days. The problem is that very few consumers in the U.S. and worldwide actually subscribe (or have access) to Gigabit services at present. Nevertheless, there is an undeniable sense that the Gigabit future is now. Just this week, U.S. cable giant Comcast announced that its 2 Gbps GigaPro service will be available in several new markets, while AT&T announced that its GigaPower service will be offered in additional major metro markets (17 total) and the operator will expand its target GigaPower customer based to include multifamily residences – i.e., apartments and condominiums – known as multi-dwelling units (MDUs) in industry jargon. At the CEO level, there was one key message: the need for businesses to disrupt themselves or face hard times ahead.
While Hunter S. One of the main takeaways from our coverage of TM Forum Live! 2015 in sunny Nice earlier this month was around the (im)maturity of the ETSI NFV MANO stack. Nokia used the TMF Live! event to conduct its 2015 Nice Analyst Day, including an update on its Nokia Telco Analytics solution highlighting China Mobile’s adoption for predictive complaint analysis as well as its overall approach to solving operator pain points.
Nokia still must show that its Telco Analytics solution can improve near-future operator monetization and data management objectives to avoid extending operator ROI concerns with previous analytics investments.
Nokia provided an update of its Nokia Telco Analytics solution at its Nice Analyst Day during the TM Forum Live! event. The solution encompasses descriptive analytics (e.g., traffic steering, analytics-aware SON), online analytics (real-time GEO) and predictive analytics. The predictive analytics component included a China Mobile use case for predictive complaint analysis applications that enabled the operator to realize outcomes such as a 38% decrease in complaints about network and service quality and 66% improvement in first call resolution.
